New year came and it is time to think about savings. I hope that everyone's resolution for this year is about Saving Money. If you have any cash savings available it is a good time to invest in the Tax Free Savings Account.

The nice thing about the TFSA account it is that any interest earned is tax-free. Money can be taken out anytime from TFSA because it is a savings account. Most of the time TFSA has higher interest rate. But if you do not need TFSA money you can invested in GIC or stocks, and remember any interest you earn is tax-free.

Now who offers the best interest rates.

ING Direct is usually has the best rate. However, I have recently discovered about the Canadian Tire Financial Services. Their TFSA interest rate is whooping 2.75%. Probably subject to change in the future, but they all do that. Note that some institutions also offer higher interest rate on the initial deposit just to get you in. You may want to check out ING Direct and PC Financial as other options.

TFSA Summary: The TFSA account earns guaranteed tax-free interest and gives you the ability to withdraw your money any time.

I read once the Feng Shui book and since then I kept all my toilet lids closed. I have never realized that I also kept my washroom cleaner.

Well, so what is the story about Feng Shui. I read that every time you flush the toilet, in addition to water the positive chi energy is swept away down the drain. Therefore, if you keep the toilet lid closed that energy stays in your home and life.

You cannot retain the water when you flush the toilet. That water and waste must go. You must also realized that before you flush in the toilet and the rim germs accumulate. When you flush the water flushes some of them down the drain and some of them travel out in every direction.

Now if you have anything close by such toothbrushes, shavers, soaps and towels. Where do you think that the splashed germ water will go? Of course on all the things close by.

After what you read may be it is now a good time to change some things around the house including the old habits. The new habit is to keep the toilet lid closed at all times when flushing the toilet and afterwards. It may be harder to do that with older family members, however, children learn fast.

How do you make visitors to do that? I think simple idea is to write a special note card or even a note framed in front of the toilet that tells the visitor to keep the toilet closed and as a nice gesture you may want to explain why.

Hope this will help you keep your washroom more hygienic and keep you away from germs.

The Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code is a voluntary code that most major retailers in Canada follow. It guarantees accurate prices at the checkout scanner.

The policy states: 'If the scanned price of a non-price ticketed item is higher than the shelf price or any other displayed price, the customer is entitled to receive the item free, up to a $10 maximum. When the item has a price tagged, the lowest price applies. When identical items are incorrectly priced, the second one will be sold at the correct price.'

If the item scanned has wrong price at the participating retailer, you will get it for free or $10 off if the item is more than $10. Ensure to ask, it may not be promoted, all that for pointing out the error. Participating stores should have a sticker around the checkout register and entrance doors.

Weatherstripping method is to prevent from air leak through gaps around the house, mainly doors and windows.

For the weatherstripping to be effective, all the gaps must be closed completely. The weatherstripping material should be flexible in order to spring back to its original shape when opening and closing doors.

Apply weatherstripping to the tops and sides of any door frame in your house. Try V-shaped weatherstripping because it maintains good seal for warped doors or uneven openings. The V-shaped weatherstripping is like wedge.

Look for special weatherstripping for doors, because it must withstand constant opening and closing cycle, must withstand changing temperatures, and moisture caused by temperature differences.

Note, weatherstripping is effective method to reduce air leaks around the house. Leaks can contribute to loss of energy up to 40%.

TEETHER is an item that sooths baby's gums during the teething period. The item is usually some kind of polymer made ring or other shaped object filled with liquid or gel. The liquid inside must be pure and free of any type of bacteria or contamination. This is just in case the teether gets punctured. Health Canada requires that baby teether is free of any living micro-organisms. However, looks like approximately 11 brands that arrived Canada did not pass this test. The question is how is that we decided to test the product when already in the consumer hands, or more so in baby's hands.

How is this possible? Everything is possible if you do not perform right tests or skip process steps, and most of all looks like importers or distributer do not think about the safety, rather think about how fast they can sell it to the stores. So this is one loose end. Another might be is that the design of each teether passed the failure test, so the manufacturing decided to be easy on the filling material of the teether. I wonder what kind of failure tests they performed that made them think to be ignorant of that step in the process. Looks like someone is paying for the screw up, and good thing there were no illness incidences in this matter. Another loose end is that they Health Canada tested first one in 2006, and no body got the idea.

The following stats were compiled based on the 2009 recalled list from Government of Canada - Healthy Canadians. The numbers are kind of scary how many different brands were recalled. We were fortunate that there were no incidences posing health issues on the baby. My suggestion, find other way, I am sure that the polymer the teether is made of may be not be good for baby to chew on either.

McDonald's 'Shrek Forever After' Collectible Drinking Glasses Recall Notice

McDonald's 'Shrek Forever After' 16 oz collectible drinking glasses made in United States and distributed by McDonald's Restaurants of Canada are being recalled. The glasses come in four different characters: Shrek, Fiona, Puss n' Boots, and Donkey. It is the designs on the glass that contains cadmium and long term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects. This glassware was tested and determined to be in full compliance with Canadian requirements for heavy metals including cadmium.

So far, neither McDonald's Canada nor Health Canada has received reports of illnesses related to the use of these glasses. Approximately 1.4 million of the recalled glasses were sold exclusively at McDonald's restaurants across Canada starting May 10th to June 4th, 2010.

It is incorrect to say loose weight for free. However, in here free means that you don't sign up for any loose weight programs. All you need is to change your bad habits and bring on the discipline.

You already buying food, so why not buy good healthy food. Note foods high in salt will make you eat more.

PROTEIN - eat about 6 good servings of protein a day; how to measure your serving simple, size of your palm.
CARBOHYDRATES - eat about 6 good servings of carbohydrates a day; serving defined as above.
VEGETABLES - eat unlimited amount of vegetables, or have the same amount as protein and carbohydrates.

DRINK - drink about 10 glasses of water, try to drink before or after meals; drinking during meals dilutes the digestive enzymes thus your digestion my slow down.

EXERCISE - simple walking will do; start with 20 minutes walk, and gradually increase to 40 or 1 hour; try to pick roads that are uphill. Bring friend with you.

How about your cravings? Well, we all know sweets are carbohydrates and with lots of sugar. The more carbohydrates you eat, the more you want to eat. Well pick a day of the week and treat yourself with cookies or cakes, but only once a week to satisfy your craving.

Hope you can follow the above steps. After few months after you adjust yourself to the following nutritional plan, you can enhance your program even more. The reason I don't want to write anything enhanced here yet because people get overwhelmed and either don't do it at all, or do it once and get discouraged.

With this plan your weight loss is slow, but effective, healthy and enjoyable. Be patient.

Last year before Christmas Real Canadian Superstore started store renovations and also re-designing their online store look. It took a while for the consumers to adjust, since they moved things around in the store a lot. Comments like this would be heard - 'It used to be here', 'Oh this is now to expensive with round down'. It seems better now, as consumers got know the store better, plus the local store, for example one in Aurora Ontario offered free appreciation coupons - free cheese, juice and BBQ ribs. It took forever to get the ribs, as they were always not in stock.

However, dissatisfaction comes from looking at the weekly flayer online. It used to be a mirror image of the printed version. Now it is store online look alike, lists individual items. Its nice and clean, but most of the time the products are not even clearly visible - too small to see. Since, some of us like to look at the deals online, this whole change isn't something consumer would look forward too. Simple search would not even find pampers diapers.

Everyday Find Over 2000 Prices Rounded Down is a newest campaign to attract more consumers to Superstore. Great deals can be found, no doubt. The look is not so great, but who cares when the price is right. When the 2000 Prices Rounded Down was introduced, it clearly showed similarities to the Wal-mart printed flayer, the rounded numbers and never mind the color scheme. Is this to confuse the consumers, or someone creating this campaign didn't have the imagination?

Lastly, with the great renovation no body thought of fixing the self-serve bag loading dock. Very inconvenient design for the reusable bags and recyclable boxes. Seems like we all tend to overlook the hardest projects.

Time-of-Use Electricity Prices & How To Adapt

Back in October 2009 our household received a notice that the Time-of-Use price schedule is in effect. Two things happened. Firstly the PowerStream notified us that the new Electricity Prices & Charges for York Region customers are in effect since September 1st, 2009. Little late notice. Secondly, they send us historical data based on last year electricity consumption data that give us a comparison of constant rates versus the time-of-use rates. Another disappointment, if we were to be on the time-of-use method last year, we would have paid more for electricity by $2.33.

However, the Time-of-Use for York Region is in effect and there is nothing we can do but adapt. The Time-of-Use has different electricity rates, depending when the electricity is used. It has three periods, Off-peak, Mid-peak and On-peak. The most expensive rate of course is during On-peak. For example, our Time-of-Use rates from PowerStream are: for Off-Peak is $0.042 per kWh, for Mid-Peak is $0.076 per kWh, and On-Peak is $0.091 per kWh.

Another interesting fact about the Time-of-Use is that the price do change for on, mid and off-peak between Summer and Winter. The hours for On-Peak prices for summer season (May 1 - October 31) are between 11 am and 5 pm. The hours for On-Peak prices for winter season (November 1 - April 30) are from 5 pm to 9 pm. The PowerStream recommends to run dishwasher and dryer after 9 pm, or on weekends or holidays. But then how about the oven - another great electricity eater, coincidentally we need to eat too. The On-Peak during winter season falls on dinner time, a time when parents, children get home and dinners are being prepared. But then what could be worst, cooking dinner during summer time and running the air conditioner.

Now let me tell you how we changed our life style to follow the Time-of-Use price periods.

As per recommendations we run our dryer after 9 pm and weekends or holidays, and if the laundry really needs to be done, then just washer is used, and clothes are hanged.
We need to eat. Therefore, I use my toaster oven which uses much less energy than the regular oven.
We do batch cooking after 9 pm.
Air conditioning will be interesting, it all depends how hot next summer will be. May be we should finish the basement, as it is always cooler in the lower parts of the house.

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has much better recommendations how to Make The Shift to the Time-of-Use price periods and the Ontario Power Authority - Every Kilowatt Counts has a lot of good information for you to study.
